Mission: The Bluecoats provide programs for youth in music and performance training. Leadership, personal, character and social development skills are emphasized through the challenge, excitement, and self-discipline presented by the corps through travel, competition, and pursuit of excellence.
The Bluecoats are a marching music education organization made up of 150 young men and women between the ages of 15 and 22. The Bluecoats were founded in 1972 as an outgrowth of the Canton Police Boys Club.
The Bluecoats are a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation based in the Akron/Canton region of northeast Ohio.
The Bluecoats operate Artistry IN BLUE Winter Guard, a regionally competing indoor ensemble for young color guard performers in Northeast Ohio. The organization also operates Rhythm IN BLUE Alumni Ensemble, performing locally year-round.
The Bluecoats own and operate the Champion Event Center, a community bingo, banquet and special events center based in North Canton, Ohio.
The Bluecoats are long-term members of Drum Corps International (DCI), a governing body that facilitates a competitive drum and bugle corps tour across the United States each summer.
The Bluecoats have consistently placed in DCI’s elite “Top 12” since 1987. We earned the bronze medal in 2010 and 2015, the silver medal in 2014, and were the Drum Corps International World Champions in 2016.
The Bluecoats travel over 10,000 miles and compete in about 30 performances each season as participants in DCI’s annual tour. Our “road fleet” consists of five tour busses, two 53′ equipment trailers, a 48′ kitchen trailer, and a souvenir sales vehicle.
The Bluecoats members rehearse up to 11 hours per day perfecting their 11 minute competitive program. They sleep on high school gym floors in sleeping bags during the summer tour.
The Bluecoats members’ average age is 20 years. Many are music majors in college that are enhancing their education through participation in the premier marching music activity.
The Bluecoats rely on the support of dozens of hard working volunteers for their continued success. The corps’ Board of Directors, food service crews, sewing crews, and fundraising committees all contribute their time on a volunteer basis.
The Bluecoats proudly represent Northeast Ohio! Each year, the corps appears in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators throughout the United States.
