Some of the hardest working people at this radio station are NOT heard over the airwaves.
Mary Westphal is my choice for Employee Of The Month!
Mary is the receptionist at the front desk, the first person you'll meet when you visit (or call).
Mary's job description would go on for pages. She's everybody's secretary.
She schedules my Community Spotlight interviews, she looks out for the sales staff, irons-out listener questions . . . she even shovels the walk in wintertime and waters the landscaping in summertime!
I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just say
"THANKS, MARY, FROM ALL OF US!"
Now, about "the spider."
The other morning we noticed our on-air sound wasn't very good.
We are an AM station, so sometimes atmospheric conditions mess with our broadcast.
This time it was something, well, a little different.
WHBC Chief Engineer Dale Lamm ran out to the transmitter site and must have smiled when he saw the problem.
Now, I'm not an enginer, but I'll try to explain:
Something got between two important parts of the transmitter . . .
A DADDY LONGLEGS SPIDER...
Tiny Spider Causes Problems at WHBC
might be a good headline.
The spider paid for its misstep with its life.
Dale removed the body and the broadcast got back to normal.
