A total of 18 police officers and 28 firefighters will get pink slips as the mayor announces a "statement of rationale" in trying to fend off a huge budget deficit in Canton next year. The announcement came yesterday saying the layoffs are necessary due to a dramatic decrease in general fun revenue. Mayor William Healy II says they will begin negotiations with the unions to try to reduce the number of layoffs with alternatives like buyouts or possible union concessions. Approximately 8 police officers may get their jobs back because of federal stimulus dollars.
