Unemployment is on the rise again in Stark County. Figures released Wednesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show Stark County's jobless rate was 13.5% in January. That's up from 12.2% from the previous month and the highest level seen since June 1983. In Canton, January joblessness stood at 14.8%, an increase from December's revised figure of 13.6%.
Unemployment was highest in southwest Ohio's Clinton County at 19.3%. The lowest jobless rate was 8.4% in central Ohio's Delaware County.
The state's overall unemployment rate held steady in January. Ohio Department of Job and Family Services spokesman Brian Harter says job losses in financial services and other sectors were balanced out by gains in areas such as business services.
