Budget Deficit Remains Focus in Canton

Canton city council's finance committee is looking for ways to eliminate a projected $1.8 million budget shortfall in 2010. Chairman Greg Hawk says council faces some tough decisions between now and April 1, the deadline for approving a spending plan. Hawks says several proposals are being considered, some of which he describes as "unpleasant".
Options include using paving and capital improvement funds to pay for utilities this year. Some city lawmakers want the city to look into collecting unpaid bill, nicluding parking tickets.
Mayor Willim Healy II pointed out that the city currently has its lowest number of employees in a decade. Council hopes to avoid layoff, if possible.
