(News/Talk 1480 WHBC) – The Canton Police Department is preparing to roll out its Neighborhood Camera Program.

The department says the ten new cameras will be focused on high crime areas and busy intersections and will help their investigative efforts with everything from traffic crashes to gun violence.

Captain John Gabbard makes clear that the cameras will only see public areas and will not be an invasion of privacy.

“This is simply technology that will boost our ability to respond and help citizens out.”

He says the ten new cameras will supplement the ten they already have installed around the downtown business district.

The captain says they’ll be conducting community outreach with the public before the cameras go up, to educate residents about the scope of the project and the technology involved.

He says they also want to hear from residents about what neighborhoods should get one of the new cameras.

“We want to hear from the community and from their representatives on council about what areas they feel should be covered, and I feel that we’ll probably have a lot of the same ideas.”
