(News/Talk 1480 WHBC) – A man opened fire on a Canal Fulton police officer on Saturday night, prompting a SWAT situation.

It happened at an apartment on Waterside Avenue starting at around 6:15.

Over the police radio an officer could be heard saying “shots fired, shots fired” and then moments later he said that he believed that he had been shot in the foot.

Witnesses at the scene said the suspect shot through the door at officers.

A SWAT team responded and the suspect’s apartment was surrounded.

After asking the man numerous times to leave the apartment and surrender, or to at least call a relative to start a dialogue, police went in.

The man was found dead inside the apartment from a self-inflicted wound.

The officer who was shot in the foot will be okay, in fact, he stayed on the scene for the duration of the situation, we were told.

It’s unclear if a bullet stuck him, if it was a ricochet or if it was shrapnel from the door.

The suspect’s name was not released, as next of kin had not yet been notified.
