Canton Council Chambers Cleared During Chaotic ‘Public Speaks’ Session

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Not much got done at Canton City Council Monday night.

That’s because the Public Speaks portion of the meeting devolved from complaints about police brutality to shouting from audience members and an argument over how much time one resident had to speak.

That convinced council to adjourn for the night without passing any ordinances.

It’s not known what may happen with the Public Speaks segment at the next meeting next Monday night.

Council member Chris Smith on Canton’s Morning News Tuesday morning on 1480 WHBC Radio says she understands the frustrations of residents who want answers regarding the police department.

But she says order must be maintained at meetings so the business of the city can be conducted.

Police cleared the room after the meeting was adjourned.

Less than two hours before the meeting started, it was announced that Officer Brandon Momirov had been fired by the city for his actions during an arrest last month.

And at the very start of the meeting, Stark County Prosecutor Kyle Stone spoke of how the grand jury process works, relative to other police brutality cases.
