Canton Council Raises Rental Registration Fee

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Canton City Council raised the rental registration fee for landlords to $110 annually at Monday night’s meeting.

The funding will go to heading off a potential deficit spending situation with the city’s building department.

The $30 annual increase will bring in another estimated $1.1 million annually.

The department does code enforcement and is also in charge of mowing vacant lots.

Landlords spoke against the increase at the meeting, saying they’ll have to pass it along to tenants.

First Ward Councilman Greg Hawk says the real answer is owner-occupied housing, like the new and remodeled houses in the Shorb neighborhood, in partnership with Canton for All People.
