(News/Talk 1480 WHBC) – Representatives from the Canton City School District joined some of their cohorts from other districts in Columbus on Wednesday, asking the governor to line-item veto any provision in the finalized state budget that continues to allow the state takeover of school districts in Academic Distress.

Canton Board of Education Vice President Eric Resnick says Canton is one of about a dozen districts headed toward that categorization.

Resnick tells WHBC News that state takeovers don’t work and they are basically taxation without representation.

Some senators say school boards need to be held accountable when their district is failing.

Resnick responds that assistance from the state would be helpful, what with the poverty issues that urban districts must deal with.

The House version of the budget bill does not include the state takeover concept.
