CPD Chief Investigates, Tries to Explain Officer’s Actions in Weekend Arrest

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Canton’s police chief is again forced to explain an officer’s behavior during an incident Saturday night in the city.

Chief John Gabbard says Officer Brandon Momirov kicked a man in the chest.

That man appeared to be complying during a couple of arrests.

Of course video of the incident has made the rounds on social media.

Chief Gabbard says the officer’s actions are under review.

He says his officers are often forced to deal in stressful confrontations with armed suspects.

Police were called to the Mahoning Manor apartment complex at the dead end of Morris Avenue NE off 19th Street for an argument among a dozen people.

They observed guns on arrival.

Three men were arrested.

30-year-old Terrence Backie of Canton was found guilty Monday of misdemeanor obstruction and given a suspended jail sentence.

Backie is not the man who was kicked.

Chief Gabbard says they have significantly reduced gun violence in the city over the last two years.
