LCSD Revises HS Marching Band Fan ‘Greeting’

LOUISVILLE, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Friday night high school football isn’t without its controversies at times.

Perhaps it’s a surprise that this one involved a marching band.

The Louisville High School band has revised its greeting to fans at football games.

They’ve changed a straight-out arm salute to a friendlier wave.

The salute has always been accompanied by the word “hi”, as spoken by band members.

Some complaints were heard from community members after the band performed the old greeting at the Stark County Fair last week, saying it resembled the Nazi salute to Hitler.

The new gesture, introduced Friday night.

Superintendent Michelle Shaffer in a statement says it was a difficult change to make, but the old gesture did resemble that of a dark time in world history.

She says she wants everyone inside and outside the community to feel comfortable.
