Officer Involved Shooting in Akron Thanksgiving Night

Akron Police, the Bureau of Crminal Investigations and the Ohio Attorney General’s office will look into an officer involved shooting that took place late last night.

Officials report around 11pm – a pair of patrol officers were sitting inside their marked police cruiser at East Avenue and Vernon Odom Blvd, working on a report from a prior unrelated call. Moments later, officers heard gunshots nearby and exited their patrol car to investigate.
Officers encountered a man with a loaded firearm, and one of the officers, a nearly 5-year veteran of the police department, discharged his weapon,
striking the suspect.

The second officer did not shoot. Officers administered emergency first aid until EMS arrived. The man was taken to the hospital where he died.
The officer involved and his partner have been placed on paid administrative leave per departmental procedure.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to the scene and will conduct the investigation. After the investigation, the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury for evaluation.
The Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct a separate internal investigation. The results will be provided to the police chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor.
