(News/Talk 1480 WHBC) – In the wake of a flurry of shootings in Canton, about ten people spoke up at Monday night’s Canton City Council meeting, saying the city’s focus needs to be on reducing crime, not on things like the multi-million dollar Centennial Plaza project.

On with Canton’s Morning News Mayor Tom Bernabei said, while the city is doing a lot to reduce crime, they need to do more and double their efforts.

“Our residents shouldn’t have to feel afraid for their safety in their homes and neighborhoods,” the mayor said.

Bernabei says the city is in the process of hiring 13 more police officers and has demolished more than 500 dilapidated houses over the last few years.

The mayor says he, the police chief and safety director all care very much about helping residents feel safer in their neighborhoods.

He says the three of them have been meeting regularly over the last several weeks to go over staffing levels, overtime and new technologies in fighting crime.
