UPDATE: JACKSON STANDOFF: Shots Exchanged, Fugitive Killed

JACKSON TWP., Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – A man wanted in southern West Virginia is dead and a Canton Regional SWAT team member was injured by gunfire.

That during a standoff Monday afternoon that brought things to a halt in a portion of Jackson Township, even on I-77.

The U.S. Marshal Service says they were preparing to arrest the unnamed man in a room at the Rodeway Inn on Sunset Strip Avenue NW near Portage Street when he pointed a gun at officers and opened fire.

After a two-hour standoff during which gunfire was exchanged, the man was shot dead.

The officer who is reportedly a North Canton police officer was taken to the hospital, though injuries are not considered life threatening.

That officer needed surgery and was expected to be released sometime on Tuesday.

The incident closed I-77 between the Whipple/Everhard and Shuffel Street exits for more than an hour.

There was an extensive traffic backup in both directions.

The man was wanted on a federal weapons violation.
