‘Text to 911’ Now Available in Stark

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – We knew it was coming, now it’s here.

Stark County residents with texting-capable cell phones using the major mobile carriers are able to “Text to 9-1-1”.

County EMA Director Tim Warstler explains that callers should simply text the three numbers, then wait for the dispatcher to text back.

9-1-1 operators still prefer to talk to a person, especially in a life-threatening situation.

The texting service is really designed for those with a hearing impairment or those calling in a dangerous situation.

The county and A-T and T have been working together for the past year to get this service up and running.

The county reminds us to use the service responsibly.
