Union: Republic ‘Furlough’ Feels More Like ‘Closure’

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC and ONN) – Indefinite furlough.

It means the same as “permanent closure” to the steelworkers at the Republic Steel plant in Canton.

United Steelworkers Local 1200 represents 185 of those heading to the unemployment line after last Thursday’s announcement.

Workers are saying it is a permanent closure, but no such notifications have been given by the company.

It sounds like the same old story that keeps repeating itself decade after decade: plant closes, work goes to Mexico.

The parent company of Republic is based in Mexico.
