With Lots of West Nile Mosquitoes, More Spraying in Canton

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Two things are needed to get rid of mosquitoes for the season: spraying, and frost.

In the city of Canton, the spraying starts Monday with the northwest quadrant covered Monday through Wednesday night.

From there it’s on to the southwest, northeast, then southeast quadrants.

Supervisor of Environmental Health with Canton’s health department Gus Drea says this is the fourth and final round of spraying.

The National Weather Service says the average date for that first frost at 36-degrees or lower is October 8, but that can vary widely.

It’s been a big year for West Nile Virus in the mosquito population.

So Drea says take precautions: wear long sleeves and long pants and put on bug spray.

Spraying hours will be from 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m. In the event of rain, windy conditions or low temperatures during any of the above scheduled dates, spraying will be rescheduled for September 19 and 20.

Residents with respiratory ailments should take necessary precautions to protect themselves and beekeepers should protect their hives.
