Bennett Sworn in as Canton Fire Chief

CANTON, Ohio (News talk 1480 WHBC) – Canton has a new fire chief.

Akbar Bennett was sworn in Monday at City Hall.

He’s the first-ever Black fire chief in the near-200 year history of the fire department.

He takes over for Tom Garra who recently retired.

There is not one Black female firefighter in the Canton Fire Department.

Bennett says he aims to change that.
