Deadline Looming for CPD Citizens Police Academy

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – The strength of the Canton Police Department often comes down to ‘number of officers’.

Chief John Gabbard would like it to be about each of those officers, one at a time.

So he’s promoting the next Citizens Police Academy, underway for eight weeks starting Thursday evening April 6.

It’s at the Thomas Wyatt Training Academy on Cherry Avenue SE.

The deadline to register is this Thursday at 4 p.m.

It’s a way to learn more about all the things the department does,.

They do a background check on participants, but Chief Gabbard says they won’t turn away someone just because they have a record.

Chief Gabbard spoke to our Pam Cook about the academy recently.

Here’s more from the CPD news release:

The Canton Police Department is proud to announce that we are now accepting applications for participation in the
2023 Canton Citizens Police Academy. This 8-week academy, which begins on April 6th, will introduce citizens to
topics such as police department operations and resources, use of force, firearm safety, the investigative process, the

court system and much more. Training will include speakers from a variety of bureaus, scenario-based decision-
making exercises, and K-9 demonstrations.
